TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- A man has been killed when the vehicle he was riding in crashed while fleeing police in Topeka.
Police Capt. Bill Cochran said officers tried to stop the vehicle for speeding early Thursday morning when it sped away. The driver ran three red lights during the short chase, eventually losing control, striking a traffic signal pole and causing the vehicle to roll several times.
The driver was ejected and emergency workers had to extricate one of the three passengers.
Both were taken to a hospital where the passenger later died.
The other two passengers were not injured.
Cochran said the victim's name won't be released until the man's family is notified. He said speed and alcohol contributed to the accident.
