WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- A federal judge will rule later on a possible new sentence for a Kansas nurse convicted of enslaving the mentally ill residents of a group home she ran with her husband.
U.S. District Judge Monti Belot heard arguments Tuesday on whether to lengthen the original seven-year sentence for 66-year-old Linda Kaufman of Newton.
An appeals court threw out the original sentence, saying the trial judge should reconsider certain factors that could mean more years behind bars for Kaufman.
Linda and Arlan Kaufman were convicted in November 2006. A jury found that they forced residents of their group home to work naked and perform sex acts while the government and their families were billed for "therapy."
