Kansas Corps helps with Kansas Day history

Kansas Corps volunteers will assist with Kansas Day celebrations in a variety of ways this month.

The Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka on Friday will have volunteers facilitate Kansas history through activities and assist event-goers with the exhibit "Kansans on the Go!" Kansas Corps volunteers will also be at the Butler County History Center and Oil Museum, El Dorado, on Saturday helping with Kansas' birthday celebrations.

Over the years, many historical museums and sites have been strained financially, and in some cases, even shut down. By volunteering, and with the help of a grant awarded by Kansas Campus Compact, Kansas Corps will help these societies commemorate and encourage Kansans to appreciate Kansas history.

Participating Kansas Corps volunteers will come from campuses all over the state: Washburn University, Butler County Community College, Pittsburg State University, Fort Hays State University, Garden City Community College, McPherson Community College, Wichita State University, Hutchinson Community College, Baker University, Pratt Community College, Coffeyville Community College, Emporia State University, and Seward County Community College.

Kansas Corps unites student volunteers from Kansas colleges and universities in public service across the state. In its inaugural year, it has completed a number of successful projects. With a single phone call, this group can be mobilized to provide disaster recovery, social services or community development assistance to any region of the state.

Kansas Corps welcomes the input of the community. Contact Leah Noakes at Kansascorps@fhsu.edu or call (785) 628-4668.
