Paul R. Mai
Paul R. Mai, 95, Hays, died Friday, April 5, 2013, at Hays Good Samaritan Center.
He was born Feb. 1, 1918, on the family farm home near Trego Center, to Fred and Marie (Blehm) Mai.
He played Ban Johnson baseball in Garden City as a youngster and pitched a perfect game in May of 1940. He later signed a professional contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers but was unable to report because of World War II. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army. He worked for Kaw Pipeline Co. for 41 years before retiring in 1981.
He married Alvina Becker on Aug. 27, 1948, in Fort Collins, Colo., and they lived in Logan, then in Plainville for 50 years before moving to Hays in 2007. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Plainville, and Trinity Lutheran Church, Hays.
Survivors include his wife, Hays; a son Ken Mai, Kansas City, Kan., a daughter, Janet Ziegler, Streamwood, Ill.; six brothers, Raymond Mai, Utica, Arthur Mai, Crystal, Minn., Vernon Mai, Mathews, N.C., Fred Mai, Pound, Wis., George Mai, Greeley, Colo., and Tom Mai, Overland Park; three sisters, Thelma Holm, Roseville, Calif., Geri Wooldridge, Bella Vista, Ark., and Rose Kvern, Aurora, Colo.; and two granddaughters.
Services will be at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hays. Burial with military honors by the Fort Riley Army Honor Guard will be at 9:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Trego Center.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or Hays Good Samaritan Society in care of the funeral home.
