Celtic trio to perform at Fall Gallery Walk
Rowan, a Celtic and World Music trio based in Lawrence, will perform at 8 p.m. Aug. 22 at Fox Pavilion. Sponsored by the FHSU Western Kansas String Academy, the concert is in conjunction with the Hays Arts Council's Fall Gallery Walk.
Rowan plays an eclectic blend of styles from the various Celtic lands, as well as other European folk styles. A typical concert takes listeners from a 17th century English fair to an 18th century Jacobite uprising, from the American Civil War to 20th century Belfast.
Rowan is in its 10th year and includes Marianne Payette Carter on fiddle, guitar, bodhran and vocals, Doug Harvey on cittern, guitar, mandolin, banjo, whistles, vocals and newcomer John Thompson on accordian and vocals.
Rowan has released three recordings over its 10-year history: "Grandfather's Horse" (1999), "Current" (2002) and "Tales Through Time" (2007).
Rowan's performance will be the culminating event of the Western Kansas String Academy's special summer program, "Celtic Tour", in which fifteen string and guitar students learned a selection of tunes from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany and Wales. Students will refine the tunes and Celtic styles in a July 29th workshop with Carter, and then perform a few pieces with Rowan during their concert.
