Hays High School will sponsor a financial aid work night for all interested seniors and their parents on Monday.

Starting time is 7 p.m. in the HHS Lecture Hall.

Craig Karlin, director of student financial assistance at Fort Hays State University, will be the guest speaker and will be speaking on behalf of all Kansas financial aid administrators.

He will show step-by-step instructions how to fill out the FAFSA form (free application for federal student aid).

The FAFSA enables students to apply for need-based scholarships, grants, loans and work study.

Completing those forms is a required step when applying for most types of financial aid from all Kansas colleges, public vocational schools, some private trade schools and most out-of-state schools.

Any questions, call the HHS counseling office at (785) 623-2608.

TMP scholars bowl 2nd at Norton

The Monarchs' nemesis struck again.

Norton snapped Thomas More Prep-Marian High School's 16-match winning streak last week, beating the Monarchs' scholars bowl team in the championship finals of the Norton Tournament.

TMP couldn't carry the momentum from an exciting semifinal victory into the final match, losing 110-40 to Norton.

Those two schools have had a lot of close matches the past several years. Last year, TMP lost at regionals to the Bluejays in a tiebreaker to go to state.

Last week's loss to Norton was the first of the season for TMP, which had gone 9-0 earlier this month to win its season-opening tournament at Natoma.

At Norton, TMP went 6-0 in pool play, then slipped past Hays High School 55-50 in the semifinals for its 16th straight win of 2009-10 before the loss in the title match.

TMP will try to continue its early-season success Monday at Colby.
