Arrest made in assaults

A 21-year-old Hays man was arrested Monday afternoon by Hays police in connection with a sexual assault of two women in the same residence, assaults that were reported earlier this month.

Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said Leaton Robert McClelland, 210 W. Sixth, was arrested on a probable cause affidavit on charges of rape, sexual assault and burglary. McClelland is a sophomore at Fort Hays State University and a lineman for the university football team.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. March 3 at a residence in the 400 block of West Fifth, Scheibler said.

Hays police were notified two women -- a 17-year-old woman and a 20-year-old woman -- had been sexually assaulted during the early morning hours of March 3 in the same residence.

McClelland remains in the Ellis County jail pending an appearance in Ellis County District Court on the charges.

Scheibler said Hays Police executed four search warrants in the course of the investigation leading up to McClelland's arrest, search warrants involving a residence and electronic devices.

"This was a priority case for us," he said. "Two people sexually assaulted near the Fort Hays State University campus in the same house on the same night. With the cooperation of the community, we were able to find a suspect pretty quickly."

Scheibler said the department received assistance in the investigation from the Ellis County Sheriff's office and the High-Tech Crime Unit.
