More snow expected in area

Many areas in northwest Kansas, including Ellis County, will be under a snow advisory until 6 a.m. Saturday morning, said meteorologist Mike Scott with the Dodge City National Weather Service.
"The snow is being monitored in southwest Colorado right now," Scott said. "It will be pushing up toward the northeast later this afternoon."
The snow likely will begin to fall in northwest Kansas this afternoon. There's a 50-percent chance the winter weather will hit, he said.
There also will be a good chance of snow after midnight, and total accumulation is predicted to be between 2 and 3 inches. This is the snowfall expected for most of the northwest, Scott said.
"That's pretty generalized, but I don't see it being any more than that," he said.
The cell is expected to blow over about 24 hours after it begins. While there's a 20-percent chance of additional snow Saturday morning, sunny skies are expected in the afternoon, he said.
In extreme western portions of the state, however, the snowfall is expected to end after midnight, with snowfall continuing until mid-afternoon in more central regions, said Chris Foltz, a meteorologist with Goodland National Weather Service.
Furthermore, a heavier accumulation of about 4 inches is expected in southwest Kansas, he said.
While the storm isn't expected to cause complete white-out conditions or close the interstate, motorists traveling after the holiday should exercise caution, Foltz said.
"They should follow the standard procedure -- allow extra time when traveling, because the snow could cause you to need to reduce the speed," he said. "Reduced visibility also could be an issue, so drive with caution. Slow down and give yourself extra spacing."
The winds are expected to be as high as 20 mph, which could cause blowing slow and reduced visibility, Foltz said.
"With the weekend travel, we wanted to give folks as much notice as possible to plan ahead, because it certainly could affect travel," he said.
