News and notes from Boone

BOONE, Iowa --  Jacob Crowell of Clearwater was well on his way to advancing to Saturday's big show in the hobby stock class at the 30th annual IMCA Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa.

He was running third when he got turned by another driver. He dropped back to 13th before finishing 10th, a few spots out of a qualifying spot.

For the week, the teenager made the A-main Monday and Tuesday nights, then earned enough points to start on the front row of Wednesday's last-chance qualifier.

Starting from behind

Drivers at the Super Nationals are placed into heats by a computerized drawing. Only Brandon Blochlinger and Danny Morrison Jr. were fortunate enough to start on the front row of their heats in the modified class.

"That's what I'm disappointed about the most,"  Morrison said. "I think that was my best opportunity right there. I had a gimme on the front row, and I didn't make it work."

No stock car driver from Kansas started on the front row.

The average starting spot for Jason Schoenberger, Bruce Plumisto, Jeff Tubbs, Nick Tubbs and Austin Carter as 7.2 in heat races.

In the modifieds, the average starting spot for nine guys competing regularly in the area was 5.5.

"A lot of it is the draw," Tubbs said. "It's not everything, but it does help. It sucks that me and Jeff both drew last in our heat races. It's hard when you have eight laps and you start ninth."
