BOONE, Iowa -- Father and son nearly were racing Saturday at the 30th annual IMCA Super Nationals.
On Thursday, Brian Calhoon finished third in his modified Race of Champions heat after losing out on a battle with Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo. Only the top-two finishers in each of the six heats made the ROC feature Saturday.
Calhoon's son, Kaid, finished eighth in a sport mod A-main earlier this week to notch a spot in Saturday's big show of the class.
Starting to get better
Russell's Jason Schoenberger has had bad luck with the draw the last few years. On Wednesday, the stock car driver started fifth in one of 20 heats. He started seventh in his heat the next day and finished fourth -- one of his best outings in Boone the last two years.
Including Schoenberger, Bruce Plumisto, Jeff Tubbs and Nick Tubbs -- all of Colby -- and Austin Carter of New Cambria averaged starting sixth or worse in heats Thursday.
Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo., made the modified A-main Thursday night. It was the second night in a row the soon-to-be son-in-law of David Murray Jr. accomplished the feat.
Only problem was, the first night Frenier started seventh and was caught up in an early wreck.
Another wreck ended his night early in the A-main Thursday.
Back on track
Mike Petersilie provided a scare to fans Wednesday when he rolled his modified off turn one.
The Hoisington driver had his car fixed Thursday. He finished sixth in his heat.
