Carters caps championship season with win

SALINA, Kan. -- On the final points night of the season for two divisions on Friday September 14, plus a special front wheel drive only event for the Barry Brittendall Memorial, plus three more divisions racing towards the end of the season, fans were treated to amazing racing with experience paying off in the end.

For Austin Carter, his banner season was capped off with an amazing fourth to first drive on the final two turns to pick up the feature win in the Coors Light IMCA Stock Car division. Michael Meyer, on his first trip to the track, led nearly all of the race with Bryan Hickman chasing him down near the end. As both drivers jockeyed for the top spot exiting turn two they made contact, leading to both becoming hooked together. Third place driver Scot Granzella saw his opportunity but got into turn three high and joined the other two leaders. Carter put his #63C on the low side and powered around the bottom of all three to pick up the win. Granzella, Meyer, and Josh McCarrell followed across the line. In post race tech Meyer was disqualified for an aluminum bell housing, moving Justin Murdock into the top four. Carter was also the Hard Charger after starting ninth. Granzella and Carter won the heat races. Carter secured the 2012 Championship with the division as well. The next event for the Coors Light IMCA Stock Cars will be both days of the Fall Fling September 28-29.

The second of two Championships was already won before the final race started in the Friesen Chevrolet Late Models presented by M&H Motors and Cave Diver's Liquor. Chris Kratzer opened up the early lead before catching lapped traffic. Darrick Klima made a charge past the lapped traffic and Kratzer and drove to the lead and eventual win. Scott Phillips put together his best effort of the season to finish second, followed by Delbert Smith in third, and Kratzer in fourth. Dave Conkwright was the Hard Charger after starting tenth and finishing fifth. Smith captured the first track title for the division by a large margin as the Late Models wrapped up a bi-weekly schedule on the season. Ryan Grit, finishing second in points, was awarding a new GM 604 crate motor courtesy of Friesen Chevrolet as the highest finishing crate motored car on the season. Grit competed with a 602 crate motor for most of the season, but despite being out horse-powered put together a string of top ten finishes to capitalize. Smith and Klima won the heat races.

Also headlining on this evening was the 5th Annual Barry Brittendall Memorial event featuring front wheel drive Mini Stocks only. The event was a crowd pleaser, producing five wide action early before a double roll over on the backstretch brought out a quick red flag. Stephanie Kelly flew off the backstretch and into a series of rollovers off the track while at the same time Dayton Wollenberg hit the inside berm on the backstretch, launching him into the air as well. Both drivers would be ok but out for the night. From there Eric Unruh took command and despite late charges from Wayne Juenemann and Dallas Dunn walked away to the win. In a fitting sight #48 returned to victory lane for the Brittendall Memorial hardware. Juenemann finished second, Dunn all the way from the back after a flat tire early in the race finished third, and Paco Montague fourth. Kevin Hackett was the Hard Charger after starting twelfth and finishing fifth in his first trip to the track on the season. Unruh and Montague won the heat races.

"Smokin'" Joe Cleveland once again put his #2 Belleville Motorsports IMCA Modified in Victory Lane. Danny Morrison Jr. did his best to reel in Cleveland near the end but came up short and finishing second. Mike Petersilie put together a solid run for third with Brian Knoell finishing second. Cleveland was the Hard Charger after starting thirteenth. Kenny Cross, Brad Morris, and Jerry Phillips won the heat races.

Tyle Frye made his return to the Speedway pay off with a victory in the Xtreme Motorsports IMCA Northern SportMod division. Frye and Brenden Damon put on a great side by side battle for the top spot with Frye finally coming out on top. Mark Franklin finished second with Josh Rice third and Damon fourth. Don Morris was the Hard Charger after starting eighteenth and finishing sixth. Jacob Schmutz, Mark Franklin, and Darin Nelson won the heat races.

Brian Davidson returned to Victory Lane as well in the Auto House Mod Lite division. Davidson snapped Brandon Gray's late season streak with Bud Lee finishing second, Gray third, and Nick Watts fourth. Davidson was the Hard Charger after starting eighth. Gray and Davidson won the heat races.

The 2012 season championship comes to a close next Friday September 21 as the Belleville Motorsports IMCA Modifieds, Xtreme Motorsports IMCA Northern SportMods, Auto House Mod Lites, Budweiser IMCA Hobby Stocks, and T&R Dirt Construction Mini Stocks all decide their champions. Race time is set for 8PM.
