Jeremy Zorn hoping for repeat at Fall Nationals
By NICK SCHWIEN
Sharing is fine, especially with family.
But this time, Jeremy Zorn would like to keep the big paycheck for himself.
Jeremy Zorn won the 2007 Fall Nationals at RPM Speedway in Hays with help from his brother, Mark. The modified driver pocketed a quick $5,000, which he shared with his brother for letting him borrow a car.
"I split the winnings with him," Jeremy Zorn said. "Hopefully I'll be able to keep it to myself this year."
All joking aside, Jeremy Zorn is ready for this weekend's Fall Nationals at RPM. Races begin at 7 p.m. Friday night, with the big payout of $5,000 to the modified winner coming at the conclusion of the 6 p.m. races Saturday.
"Last year, I felt pretty good afterwards," Jeremy Zorn said. "It got my steam up and confidence up. I wasn't even going to go last year because I had bad luck, but my brother helped me and loaned me one of his cars."
He started seventh in the feature race and drove his way to the front. Mark Zorn knows his brother is ready for this weekend as well.
"He's pretty excited to roll back in," Mark Zorn said. "It's going to be tough. There's a lot of guys talking about coming down. ... There's going to be some heavy-hitters. That's what makes it fun."
The two-day event will be the last at RPM Speedway this summer. The winner of Friday night's modified feature will grab $1,000. Plus, every racer making Saturday's feature automatically will earn $300 to start.
That's what makes this weekend's Blood, Sweat and Tears modified event so special. That and the fact that only eight points separate the top two drivers in the series.
David Murray Jr. of Oberlin leads the BST points race with 400, followed closely by Will Brack (392) and Matt Brack (386). Ronnie Wallace is fourth with 345, and Jeremy Frenier is at 343.
"We're winding down essentially," said BST promoter Joe Bellm. "There's only four points races left for the year, and two are in Hays. ... The points battle is pretty intense. First through 10th are close."
Bellm expects approximately 60 modifieds to make the two-day event but wouldn't rule out as many as 75 showing up.
That means the racing action will be tight, especially with big money on the line.
"There's going to be a lot of cars," Mark Zorn said. "You're going to have to draw good and stay out of trouble. Starting up front is the key. Everyone is so tough anymore."
Jeremy Zorn started seventh a year ago. So he didn't have an easy route to the winner's circle.
"I hit the setup just right and stuck it on the bottom," he said. " ... And when there's $5,000 on the line, you race a little better."
Both Zorns have had solid seasons so far, but Mark Zorn leads the IMCA modified state standings with 1,280 points. Corey Lagroon is second (1,201), and Barry Maupin is third (1,193).
"As long as I make the show and don't get tore up, I should be OK," Mark Zorn said about winning the state IMCA crown.
For Jeremy Zorn, he's hoping for one thing this weekend.
"Hopefully I'll get a repeat," he said. "That would be pretty awesome."
