Right now, it's as if Jason Schoenberger is standing at the front of the class teaching the lesson.
The rest of the modified drivers in northwest Kansas, well, they're the students taking notes.
Schoenberger continued his mid-season tear with another dominating performance Friday night in the modified feature at RPM Speedway in Hays.
It was his third win in the last five races at Hays' dirt oval.
"We're finally getting a good lucky streak, and the tracks are slicking off and staying pretty racey," the Gorham driver said.
It was the second win in as many races. Schoenberger also won at WaKeeney Speedway on June 27 before not racing the next weekend.
But Friday, he showed no ill effects of a week off. He won his heat race in impressive fashion, then dominated the dry, slick track for the feature.
"Slick, smooth tracks have always been my specialty," Schoenberger said. "Those wet, heavy tracks, I don't fare so good."
Schoenberger started Friday's feature outside the third row and wasted little time moving to the front. By the time the first caution waved on lap five, Schoenberger already was in the lead.
It proved to be the only caution in the 20-lap feature, and the rest of the way Schoenberger proved his dominance. By the time the checkered flag waved, the modified driver led the rest of the field by a straightaway.
"He's got the car working, and he's fast," said Danny Morrison Jr., who finished second. "That's all there is to it."
Morrison started outside the fourth row and made his way to the runner-up spot just passed the halfway point. That relegated Marty Clark, who won the June 11 feature, to third.
"These cars, I had one just like it last year and got rid of it," Clark said about Schoenberger's ride. "They go good on a slick track. Jason is just good on a dry, slick track, and he's showing it."
For Morrison, it was his fourth consecutive runner-up finish at RPM -- and twice to Schoenberger.
"I was pretty good in the heat race, and we made some changes and thought they would help us out," Morrison said. "I think they did. But Schoenberger is just fast right now, and there's not anything a driver can do when a car is that fast."
Clark finished third, followed by Mike Petersilie and Corey Lagroon, who came all the way from his 14th-place starting spot.
Schoenberger followed a similar hot streak a year ago when weather and track conditions dried out. He's following the same scenario this year as well.
"Usually June, July and August, it starts to get hot and dry, and the tracks get slick," he said. "It's a good feeling for a dirt-track racer like me."
* The hobby stock feature went to Aaron Honas, who led all 15 laps. Jerry Hudson was second, followed by Kent Tammen and Josh Latka.
* Tyler Sutton won his second straight Northern sport mod feature at RPM. Blaine Walt was second, followed by Kaid Calhoon and Clayton Wilson.
* Terry Cunningham won the stock car heat race, then got the same results in the feature. Adam Balthazor was second, and Josh Hudson was third. Pat Bedore rounded out the top four.
* Racing returns to RPM Speedway on Saturday and Sunday during the Ellis County Fair. The two-day show highlights the third annual Wheatshocker Rebel Nationals and the 305 sprint cars of the United Rebel Sprint Series. There also will be higher payouts of the supporting classes, including $1,000 to win Sunday's modified race. Races begin at 7 p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday.
