Phillips wins $5,000 at RPM Speedway

HAYS -- Over 130 race cars gathered at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, Friday and Saturday, October 10-11, for the 2nd Annual Fall Nationals. After 25 heat races, 3 pole dashes, 12 B-features, 3 A-features and 3 main events, Jerry Phillips of Galva, Mike Nichols of Harlan, IA, and Kensington's Jerry Hudson collected the weekend's top paychecks.
Phillips started outside front row of the 30-lap IMCA Modified main event. He quickly jumped to the lead, trailed by Friday night's feature winner Kenny Sweet, Mike Hansen, Chris Burk and Jay Noteboom. The lone caution in the race came on lap 20 when Ronnie Hill coasted to a stop in turn 2. Phillips again pulled away on the restart and would lead the entire distance to the checkers and the $5,000 winner's check. Sweet held on to second, followed by Hansen, Noteboom, and David Murray Jr. Last year's winner Jeremy Zorn of Russell finished 11th.
Nichols made the long haul from Iowa worthwhile as he dominated the IMCA Stock Car division over the weekend. Nichols won his heat and the A-feature on Friday, then won the pole dash on Saturday to start on the pole of the 25-lap main event. Nichols led all the way to cash in on the $3,000 payday. The race was red flagged on lap 13 when Arnold Williams rolled. Williams was okay but done for the night. The only caution waved on lap 19 when Pat Bedore spun. Each time Nichols pulled away from the field. Travis Sherfick closed in on Nichols late but had to settle for second, followed by Terry Cunningham, Rod Staats, and Jason Rogers.
Hudson led all 20 laps of the IMCA Hobby Stock main event to collect $1,000, but had to work hard to earn it. The caution flag only waved twice during the race, both times for debris on the track. Hudson was hounded by Kirk Karst early, then later by Mike Traskowsky the rest of the way. Ricky Runnion finished third, trailed by G.W. 'Cheeseburger' Fuller and Jeremy Couse.
Cars were on hand for the weekend from Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Iowa for the final race of the season for 2008 at RPM Speedway.
