OBERLIN -- The track might be small, but the challenge is big. That's the task facing Colorado Region drivers in the United Rebel Sprint Series on Saturday night at El Paso County Speedway in Calhan, Colo.
"It can be a little difficult," Levi Wisecup said. "It slicks off and takes rubber. It can be difficult to pass at times."
The last time the Rebels competed on the quarter-mile dirt track, Blake Smith Jr. walked away with a win in a non-wing show. Saturday's race will be a winged feature.
"The key to getting around there is to have your car set up to how the track shapes up at the end of the race," Wisecup said. "It's usually tacky early, then slicks off."
Wisecup finished fourth in the non-wing show in Calhan to earn valuable region points. That portion of the URSS has seen growth this season.
"The Colorado group is a really good group of guys to race with," Wisecup said. "Everyone is in the URSS. Everyone is helpful with set-ups and everything else."
Reed Bernbeck finished sixth in the non-wing show and is looking to snag his first career URSS win.
"I love that small track," Bernbeck said. "I love the quarter-mile tracks. I'm not a big fan of the big half-mile tracks. I like the quick tracks and the fast driving."
Everyone in the Colorado Region is chasing veteran Patrick Bourke. Bourke leads the region with 1,126 points, while Smith is second with 1,112. Adam Trimble is third (1,072), and Bob Scheaffer (1,028) is fourth.
"There's not very many Colorado shows," said Bernbeck, who is 11th in the region with 842 points. "If you have one bad night, it takes you out of the running. It's tough. There's a lot of good guys out there."
