OBERLIN -- Now, there's no time to slip up. And this Saturday's clash for the United Rebel Sprint Series at the Great American Dirt Track at Jetmore Motorplex could prove valuable when it comes to the national championship in the series.
"You have to know everyone is going to go through the rough patches," Josh Fairbank said. "It's about how quick you respond to it. You have to get through the rough patches and get back to being fast."
Fairbank is second in the national points battle with 3,026 points in 22 races. Brian Herbert, the 2008 national champ, leads the pack while trying to become the first driver to win more than one national title in series history. He has 3,434 points in 25 races. Zach Blurton is third with 2,840 points in 22 races, and Ray Seemann is fourth with 2,816 points in 20 races.
"Going into last weekend, I knew I had to go," said Fairbank, who snagged a runner-up and fourth-place finish in two Nebraska races last weekend. "I pushed the car a little harder than I had been, and it worked out for me. I've learned a few things throughout the year as well. It's been a total surprise for us to be up there in the national points race."
Also on the line are crucial Kansas Region points. Seemann leads that hunt with 2,562 points, with Herbert in second (2,560) and Fairbank in third (2,540). Barry Crane has 2,402 points to sit in fourth.
"These last races, what you want to do is throw out your bad finishes and have the other two guys you're racing with get fewer points than you," Fairbank said.
Saturday's race will be the next-to-last in Jetmore this season. The final race will be Aug. 27. The URSS did add new dates to the remaining schedule. The Rebels will compete Sept. 3 and 4 at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton. The Bullring known as Rush County Speedway in La Crosse added two more races, slated for Sept. 17 and 18.
