Special to The Hays Daily News

WAKEENEY, KS (June 7)--Race fans were treated to double features in two of the four divisions competing at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, June 7. The IMCA Modified and IMCA Stock Car features that were rained out on May 25th opened the racing program on the 3/8-mile oval.

The IMCA Modified make-up feature was first to hit the track. Brian Calhoon led the first 5 laps before point leader Corey Lagroon of Salina made a pass on the outside to take the lead. Lagroon led the remaining distance in the 20-lap caution free race to score his second win of the season. Calhoon held on to second, followed by Jeff Tubbs, Jerry Teel and Josh Hudson.

The IMCA Stock Car make-up feature was next up with a battle of the 'Jasons', Jason Rogers and Jason Davis. Davis led the opening lap before Rogers took the lead on lap 2. Two cautions in the 20-lap event kept the field close, with Davis glued to Rogers' back bumper most of the race. Rogers held on to the checkers, with Adam Balthazor getting past Davis for second. Cory Struckhoff and Travis Sherfick rounded out the top five.

After 12 heat races and one B-feature, it was time for the evening's regular main events.

Marquette's B.J. Dauer led all 15 laps of the caution free IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Dauer started fifth but charged to the front on the opening lap and never looked back enroute to his third win of the season at Wakeeney. Heat one winner Michael Schamberger finished second, followed by Kirk Karst, G.W. Fuller and Jerry Hudson. Dauer won the other heat race.

Joe Couse led the opening lap of the IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature. Jim Weigel spun on lap 2 to bring out a caution, and when the green flag waved again, Troy Robinson of Hays took over the top spot. Brian Conness moved to second by the halfway mark of the 12-lap race and gave chase but could not make the pass and had to settle for the runner-up spot behind Robinson. Joe Couse finished third, followed by Brett Conness and Duane Wahrman. Heat race winners were Jerrod Couse and Brian Conness.

The caution waved only one time during the IMCA Stock Car feature, but it was to hometown driver Terry Cunningham's advantage. Pat Bedore led at the drop of the green, but a Cole Wilson spin on lap 2 brought out the yellow. On the restart, second running Cunningham charged past Bedore to take a lead he would not relinquish. Several cars gave chase with lots of action throughout the pack but Cunningham made his way to the winner's circle for the second time this year. Adam Balthazor worked his way to second, trailed by Bryan Lariviere, Travis Sherfick and Cory Struckhoff. Cunningham, Sherfick and Lariviere were all victorious in their heat races.

Mother Nature tried to win the IMCA Modified feature, but the drivers would have nothing of it as the race was completed just before the raindrops fell. Matt Fabrizius led the first 7 laps before 'The Minneapolis Missle' Dave Hardesty took the lead. Hardesty was able to pull away to victory lane with Fabrizius settling for second, followed by Chad Sterling, Rob Day and Corey Lagroon. Heat race winners included Lagroon, Day, Hardesty, Jeff Tubbs and Matt Fabrizius, while Jason Schoenberger led the charge in the B-feature.

The evening's race sponsor was Nex-Tech/Rural Telephone of Wakeeney.

The next race at Wakeeney Speedway will be on Sunday, June 21. The IMCA-sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts will be in competition starting at 6:00 p.m.
