WaKEENEY -- For a brief amount of time, Dylan Sherfick could see his first feature win within reach.
Then Jason Schoenberger arrived and drove right by him, capturing the modified feature Sunday night at WaKeeney Speedway.
Sherfick worked his way into second place in the A-main, then had the first-place driver set up down low.
But Schoenberger, the leader in track points at WaKeeney, drove by both drivers on the high side and never looked back.
"I wasn't sure how the track was going to shape up," Schoenberger said. "It actually got pretty racey. I knew we had a shot when we went single-file."
Sunday's modified feature had two cautions, the first coming on the first lap that resulted in a restart. The second came when John Fose, Ronnie Hill and Jerry Phillips all ended up taking hard hits on the frontstretch near the halfway point.
Corey Lagroon, who was second in points entering the night, also had damage but was able to pit and get back out on the track while the other three were towed off.
Danny Keller paced the field back to the green, followed by Rick Schwab, Milo Lippelman and Sherfick. Schoenberger had moved up from his 12th-place starting spot to seventh.
Schwab wasted no time getting by Keller, and Sherfick soon followed suit, moving up to second. Meanwhile, Schoenberger was using the high side to his advantage to pick off driver after driver.
When Sherfick had moved within striking range of Schwab -- pulling alongside coming out of turn four -- Schoenberger went high and around both drivers, forcing nearly a three-wide scenario for a bit.
"When I got around that first car, I thought I had a shot," Sherfick said. "Then Schoenberger went around me. I thought I could keep up with him, and then he was gone. Nobody was going to catch Schoenberger."
Schoenberger, who had struggled earlier this season but has turned things around as of late, pulled away from Sherfick and the rest of the field to take the win.
"We're finally catching some breaks," the Gorham driver said. "We got a couple of wins, and that helps a lot, makes all the sweat worth it."
Sherfick's second-place finish was his best in his two years of driving a modified at WaKeeney Speedway.
"I've been struggling all year," Sherfick said. "I feel like I'm finally getting the hang of the car. Hopefully this will turn things around now."
Jeremy Zorn, who started outside the fourth row, finished third, followed by Rodger Peck and Schwab.
"The track fit my personality," Schoenberger said. "The car was perfect. I could go anywhere I wanted."
* Jason Davis took the stock car feature, jumping to the lead from his fifth-place starting spot. Adam Balthazor finished second, and Rod Bencken narrowly beat Terry Cunningham to the line for third.
* Matthew Crowell led every lap of the Northern sport mod feature to claim the win. Troy Attwood slowly closed ground but ran out of laps, finishing second. Clayton Wilson rallied from the back to finish third, and Josh Rice was fourth.
* Josh Latka and Jerry Hudson battled side-by-side for several laps before Hudson moved out front in the hobby stock feature. But Latka finally got by Hudson with two laps remaining to take the win. Hudson was second, followed by Michael Schamberger and Casey Gilmore.
* Racing returns to WaKeeney Speedway at 7:30 p.m. July 16. The Friday races will precede the two-day Wheatshocker Rebel Nationals and Ellis County Fair races at RPM Speedway in Hays on July 17 and 18.
