WAKEENEY (Aug. 3) -- Bad luck for a couple of drivers meant good luck for others as three new faces appeared at WaKeeney Speedway's winner's circle Sunday evening.

The BST Modified tour made a stop at the 3/8-mile oval to compete with the IMCA Modified division with 36 cars checking in. After 24 drivers qualified for the 25-lap A-main, fourth starting David Murray Jr. of Oberlin took the lead on the opening lap and started to pull away from the field. But a caution flag on lap 15 bunched the field, and 'The Wichita Lineman' Randy Wilson passed Murray to take the lead on lap 19, with outside polesitter Matt Brack of Mead, CO, running in third. The final caution waved on lap 22 for a spin by John Rawson, tightening the field for the final 4 laps. But Wilson's gear broke on the final lap, giving Brack the lead and the win. Murray finished second, followed by heat 3 winner Corey Lagroon, Jerry Phillips, and heat five victor Mark Zorn. Other heat race winners included Jeremy Zorn, Ronnie Hill, and Matt Brack, while Will Brack and Barry Maupin claimed the checkers in the two B-features.

Todd Lutters led the opening lap of the IMCA Stock Car feature before Norton's Dan Lauer took over the top spot. Lauer led through lap 11 before hometown driver Travis Sherfick took the lead. 'The Terminator' held on the remaining distance in the 20-lap race for his first win at the hometown track this season. Adam Balthazor finished second and Cory Struckhoff third, followed by heat race winners Marty Barth and Josh Hudson.

Kensington's Jerry Hudson appeared to have the IMCA Hobby Stock feature well in hand, that was until the last lap. Hudson got under leader Travis Glassman in turn 4 on lap 6 of the 15-lap event and pulled away from the field. But Hudson blew a tire in turn 1 on the final lap, sending him off the track and handing the lead and the win over to Russell's Kirk Karst. It was the second win in a row for Karst at Wakeeney. Heat one winner Glassman finished second, with Dustin Forsberg, Josh Latka, and Joey Carter rounding out the top five. B.J. Dauer won the other heat race.

Hometown driver Paul Fabrizius was hot in the Cruno division on this night. After winning the heat race, Fabrizius led all 15 laps in the caution-free feature to make his way to victory lane at Wakeeney for the first time this season. Jim Carter & Ron Watson finished second, followed by point leaders Alfred Emmons & Kenny Cain.

The evening's race sponsor was Nex-Tech/Rural Telephone.

Racing returns to Rooks County Speedway in Stockton, KS, for the Rooks County Fair on Wednesday & Thursday, August 13-14. Both nights will be points nights for Wakeeney Speedway. The IMCA-sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks will be the three classes in action starting at 7:00 p.m. each evening. The final race of the 2008 season at Wakeeney will be Sunday, August 17, at 6:00 p.m. with the regular four classes in competition.
