Races return to Trego County Fair
Special to The Hays Daily News
WAKEENEY (July 21) — Wakeeney Speedway was host to car races during the Trego County Fair Monday evening, July 21. The regular four divisions were on hand, along with the United Rebel Sprint Series 305 Sprint Cars.
Twenty cars took the green flag for the URSS main event with Kirby Hagans jumping out to the early lead. But just as the field was reaching the halfway mark of the 25-lap race, Quinter’s C.J. Johnson took the lead on lap 12 and held off Hagans for his fifth URSS win this season. Justin Schwien finished third, followed by Jeff Radcliffe and Brian Herbert. Herbert, Mike Woodruff, Willie Wynn, and Hagans all won heat races, while ‘The Kansas Tornado’ Jon Johnson was first to the checkers in the B-feature.
Thirty-four IMCA Modifieds checked in for action, with 20 cars qualifying for their A-main. Kyle Rohleder led the opening lap before the lone caution flag waved on lap 2. On the restart ‘The Taz Man’ Tyler Hahn took over the top spot, followed by Rohleder, George Tyler, Rodger Peck and Rob Day. Peck, of Minneapolis, then got past Hahn on lap 5 and led the remaining distance in the 20-lap race to become the fifth different winner in the division in 5 races at Wakeeney this season. Hahn held on for second, trailed by Marty Clark, Day, and Randy Wilson. Heat race winners included Peck, Nick Tubbs, Tyler, and Jerry Phillips. Dylan Sherfick claimed victory in the B-feature.
Kensington’s Cory Struckhoff claimed his fourth IMCA Stock Car feature win this season at the 3/8-mile oval. Todd Lutters took the lead at the drop of the green before ‘The Terminator’ Travis Sherfick took command. Struckhoff worked his way up from his 9th starting spot and got under Sherfick down the backstretch on lap 10 and drove on for the win in the caution free race. Josh ‘The Hammer’ Hudson finished second, with Sherfick, Terry Cunningham, and heat two winner Adam Balthazor rounding out the top five. Hudson won the other heat race.
The IMCA Hobby Stock feature got off to a shaky start. On the second restart, Josh Latka and Derrick Pfannenstiel both rolled in turn 4. No one was injured but the cars were retired for the night. Brian Conness led the first half of the 15-lap feature before Russell’s Kirk Karst made the winning pass on lap 8 and snapped B.J. Dauer’s four race winning streak. Dauer had problems in the feature and did not finish. Conness finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Jerry Hudson, Joey Carter, and Brett Glassman. Heat race victors were Dauer and Carter.
Norman Wiechman of Scott City led all 10 laps of the caution free Cruno main event. Heat race winners Alfred Emmons & Kenny Cain finished second, followed by Paul Fabrizius.
The evening’s race sponsor was 1st Federal Savings & Loan of Wakeeney.
Racing returns to Wakeeney Speedway on Sunday, August 3, with the regular four divisions in action. The green flag flies at 6:00 p.m.
