WAKEENEY, KS (June 27)--Josh Latka of Hays and Norton's Jason Davis were repeat winners at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, June 27, in their respective divisions.
The IMCA Hobby Stock feature got off to a rough start as an opening lap mishap claimed the cars of Al Emmons, Randy Murphy and Dalton Dolan. On the restart, Latka and Kensington's Jerry Hudson swapped the lead the first 4 laps of the 15-lap feature with Hudson grabbing the lead on lap 5 and leading to the halfway mark. Latka stayed glued to Hudson's back bumper, then on lap 14, Latka got under Hudson in turn 2 and led the remaining lap and a half for the win, his second of the season at Wakeeney. Michael Schamberger won the battle for third over Casey Gilmore and point leader Cody Graham. Hudson and G.W. 'Cheeseburger' Fuller won the two heat races.
Davis, who won earlier this season on May 30th at the 3/8-mile oval, took the lead from heat one winner Chase Conaway of Smith Center on lap 4 and led the final 16 laps of the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature. The lone caution waved on lap 10 when Dan Lauer drove off the track. Adam Balthazor chased Davis the last half of the race but had to settle for the runner-up spot. Rod Bencken was able to hold off Terry Cunningham for third, with 'Sweet' Wheat Lippelmann rounding out the top five. Davis won the other heat race.
Dodge City's Danny Keller led the first four laps of the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature before the red flag flew on lap 5 when 5 cars tangled on the frontstraight. All drivers were okay, but John Fose, Ronnie Hill and Jerry Phillips were done for the evening. Keller led the field back to green, but Rick Schwab took the top spot on lap 7 and led the next 6 laps. Point leader Jason Schoenberger of Gorham worked his way from his 12th starting spot and took the point on lap 13 and drove away from the field to make his way to the Jason Oil Winner's Circle. Dylan Sherfick, Jeremy Zorn, Rodger Peck, and Schwab completed the top five. Heat race winners were Peck, Corey Lagroon, and Schoenberger, while Brian Calhoon was first to the checkers in the B-main.
After winning the first heat race, Mathew Crowell of Clearwater took the lead at the drop of the green of the 15-lap IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature and led all the way to the checkers. Troy Attwood and heat two winner Clayton Wilson closed in on Crowell late in the race but had to settle for second and third. Josh Rice finished fourth, followed by Troy Robinson.
The evening's race sponsor was Bollig Excavating & Salapump of Wakeeney.
The next race at Wakeeney will be on Friday, July 16, at 7:30 p.m. The regular four classes return to action and will be joined by the United Rebel Sprint Series 305 Sprint Cars.
