Special to The Hays Daily News

WAKEENEY, KS (October 18)--Wakeeney (KS) Speedway held the George 'Pappy' Parsons Fall Nationals Sunday afternoon, October 18, with 5 classes in competition.

The United Rebel Sprint Series turned up 28 cars strong and Bill Hays jumped to the lead of the main event. However it didn't take tenth starting Jason Martin of Liberal long as he worked his way through traffic and took the lead on lap 7. The caution flag waved several times, but each time Martin pulled away and went unchallenged in the 25-lap race. Taylor Milton finished second but was later disqualifed for being light on the scales, followed by Hays, Ray Seemann and Smokey Fairbank. It was a tough race for a couple of the cars up in points. Point leader C.J. Johnson exited the race during a lap 18 caution, which was caused by Ken Lutters, who was third in points, losing a wheel. Heat race winners were Lutters, who also won the cash dash, Martin, Michael Woodruff and Jon Johnson. Seemann and C.J. Johnson were first to the checkers in the 2 B-mains.

The 20-lap IMCA Modified feature saw David Murray Jr. of Oberlin win his second main event in as many days. Murray, who won the fall nationals at Hays the night before, took the lead at the drop of the green and would lead the entire distance. After a lap 8 restart, Scott Drake got by Murray to take control but the yellow came back out, giving Murray the lead back. Murray took advantage and drove away for the win. Drake held on for second, followed by Dylan Sherfick, cash dash winner Cody Gearhart, and Rodger Peck. Murray, Gearhart, Dwayne Dechant, and Brady Coen were victorious in their heat races.

Iowa's Randy Brands took the lead at the drop of the green in the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature, but gave way to Jason Davis on lap 4. Mike Nichols of Harlan, IA, second in national points, then worked his way to the top spot on lap 8. Travis Sherfick spun late in the race to set up a green-white-checkered finish with Nichols, Davis, cash dash winner Terry Cunningham, and Brands leading the field back to green. The top four finished that way at the checkers with Wheat Lippelmann rounding out the top five. Heat race victors were Cunningham and Brands.

The IMCA Hobby Stock feature got off to a rough start. On the opening lap, a 3 car tangle on the backstraight brought out a caution, then on the restart, heat two and cash dash winner Josh Latka blew a tire in turn four in the middle of traffic, causing a pileup that saw Don Strecker roll. He was alright but done for the day. After the restart, the race went caution free and Russell's Kirk Karst led all 15 laps for the win. Casey Gilmore got past Leon Pfannenstiel for the runner-up spot, with Mike Traskowskey and Jerry Hudson completing the top five. Dalton Dolan won the other heat race.

The Northern Sport Mods had a wild finish in their 12-lap feature. Heat race and cash dash winner Brian Conness seemed to have the race well in hand when Derrick Pfannenstiel spun on the last lap, setting up a one lap shootout. After the restart, Brian Conness drifted high, then second and third running Bryan Herrick and Brett Conness tangled up, leaving a hole in turn 3 for Tanner Portenier and Tyler Watts to sneak through to take the top 2 spots. Herrick recovered to finish third.
