LAWRENCE -- Students from nine Kansas high schools will be honored Thursday by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and KU Endowment.

A total of 50 seniors from high schools in Ellis, Rooks, Russell and Trego counties will be recognized for their academic achievements and named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 6:30 p.m. dinner and program at Hays High School, 2300 E. 13th.

Area students include:

Sidney Gottschalk, a resident of Hays and a senior at Ellis High School.

Abigail Hafliger, a resident of Ellis and a senior at Ellis High School.

Wanda Jimenez, a resident of Ellis and a senior at Ellis High School.

Blake Huxman, a resident of WaKeeney and a senior at Trego Community High School.

Payton Nowlin, a resident of WaKeeney and a senior at Trego Community High School.

Cade Papes, a resident of WaKeeney and a senior at Trego Community High School.

Audra Nowak, a resident of Victoria and a senior at Victoria High School.

Brooke Schmidt, a resident of Victoria and a senior at Victoria High School.

During the ceremony, each student will receive a Webster's New College Dictionary and a commemorative certificate.

Timothy Caboni, vice chancellor for public affairs at the University of Kansas, will speak to the students and their parents and guests.

Honored students will be guests of the alumni association and KU Endowment.

Community volunteers collect reservations, coordinate details and serve as local contacts for the event. Shiela Brening of Hays is the site coordinator. Alan and Lori Moore of Hays are the Ellis County coordinators. Tom and Cassie Nuckols of Plainville are the Rooks County coordinators. Nancy Lane of Russell is the Russell County coordinator. Jim and Kathy Cleland of WaKeeney are the Trego County coordinators.

The following local students accepted scholarships from Fort Hays State University for the 2012-1013 academic year at a recent student recognition program in Phillipsburg.

Laurie Beard, a 2012 Phillipsburg High School graduate, accepted a $1,200 Miller black and gold academic award and a $900 academic opportunity award from the College of Business and Leadership. Beard plans to major in marketing.

Austin Brookhouser, a 2012 Stockton High School graduate, accepted a $900 academic opportunity award in health and human performance and a $500 copper academic award. He plans a career in athletic training.

Paige Buss, a 2012 Logan High School graduate, accepted a $700 bronze academic award and a $500 academic opportunity award in communication disorders. She plans to major in speech-language pathology.

Shelbie Christensen, a 2012 Phillipsburg High School graduate, accepted a $500 academic opportunity award from the College of Business and Leadership. She plans to major in accounting.

Lucas Crist, a 2012 Phillipsburg High School graduate, accepted an $800 Hays City silver academic award and a $500 academic opportunity award from the Department of Justice Studies. He plans to major in criminal justice.

Tiffani Eller, a 2012 Phillipsburg High School graduate, accepted a $900 academic opportunity award in psychology and an $800 Hays city silver academic award. She plans to major in psychology.

Kylee Fall, a 2012 Phillipsburg High School graduate, accepted a $900 academic opportunity award in psychology and a $700 bronze academic award. She plans to major in psychology or radiology.

Alex Harm, a 2012 Phillipsburg High School graduate, accepted a $400 FHSU student recognition program scholarship. She plans to major in radiologic technology.

Anne Harvey, a 2012 Hill City High School graduate, accepted a $500 copper academic award and a $500 academic opportunity award in allied health. She plans to major in in medical diagnostic imaging.

Melissa Hawks, a 2012 Northern Valley High School graduate, accepted a $500 academic opportunity award in teacher education. She plans to major in elementary education.

Janet Johnston, a 2012 Phillipsburg High School graduate, accepted a $900 academic opportunity award in nursing and a $700 bronze academic award. She plans to major in nursing.

Jordan Kellerman, a 2012 Phillipsburg High School graduate, accepted a $1,200 Miller black and gold academic award and a $900 academic opportunity award in biology. She plans a career in medicine.

Nessa Larsen, a 2012 Palco High School graduate, accepted a $900 academic opportunity award in communication studies and a $700 bronze academic award. She plans a career in journalism.

Collin Pfeifer, a 2012 Hill City High School graduate, accepted a $900 academic opportunity award in informatics and an $800 Hays city silver academic award. He plans to major in informatics.

Saige Ryan, a 2012 Smith Center High School graduate, accepted a $500 academic opportunity award in teacher education. She plans to major in elementary education.
