Hayes Charles, son of John and Mandy Charles, Hays a senior in milling science and management-cereal chemistry at Kansas State University, has spent the summer as an intern at Quaker Oats in the milling research and development group.
Initially placed in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, plant, Charles was moved to Quaker/Tropicana/Gatorade research and design headquarters in Barrington, Ill., due to flooding at the Iowa location.
Charles' assignments include increasing efficiency of the oat milling process with regard to hulling and aspiration, as well as evaluating potential uses of Time Domain-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance imaging in the milling research process and comparison of TD-NMR technology to existing near infrared constituent evaluation techniques.
COLBY -- Ninety-one students earned their place on Colby Community College spring semester honor rolls, according to Betty Kruse, college registrar.
The President's Honor Roll lists 55 students, while the Dean's Honor Roll lists 36 more.
To earn a place on a CCC honor roll, students must earn 15 or more credit hours and have no failing grades. The Dean's Honor Roll includes students with grade point averages of 3.75-3.99. The President's Honor Roll includes only students with a 4.0 GPA.

Four local students were selected to attend the 25th annual Governor's Scholars Award Program on May 4 in Topeka.
The recognition ceremony honors the top academic one percent of high school seniors. Scholars are selected from accredited public and private schools in the state.
Selected as Governor's Scholars were Kathryn Unruh, Jacob Gutierrez and Megan Thyfault, all of Hays High School; and Kelsey Duffy, Thomas More Prep-Marian High School.
OMAHA, Neb. -- The following students from northwest Kansas were named to Creighton University's Dean's Honor Roll for the spring semester of the 2007-2008 academic year.

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- Benjamin Schrant, son of Teresa and Larry Schrant, Hays, graduated from A.T. Still University's Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville on May 17. Schrant was one of 172 new physicians graduating at the 116th annual commencement. Schrant will begin his residency in anesthesiology at Northeast Regional Medical Center, Kirksville.
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Fifty-eight students were awarded the Honors College Degree at Oklahoma State University this spring.
Among them was Elise Johansen, a finance major from Hays.
Students participating in the Honors College may earn these degrees by completing all of the requirements for the General Honors Award and the Departmental Honors Award with a minimum of 39 honors hours with a 3.50 OSU and cumulative grade point averages.
This recognition is reflected on the student's official transcript and on a special honors diploma.
Hays High School senior Kathryn Unruh has been recognized by Unicel, a service of Rural Cellular Corp., as a High School Hero for her exemplary commitment to improving her community through volunteer public service.
Unruh received a $2,000 High School Heroes scholarship and award certificate for her community service activities. Unruh was honored for serving as a part of Wyldlife, mentoring students in need of guidance. She has also donated her time with Kansas Food for Life and with Hays Medical Center Volunteens.
"At Unicel, we're proud to support students like Kathryn Unruh who have dedicated their time and energy to make Hays an even better place to live," said Mike Unrein, Unicel sales director. "Such public service is critical to strengthening our communities."
Unicel created the High School Heroes program to recognize and celebrate high school students who volunteer their time in the community.
The High School Heroes program was inspired by Unicel's Hometown Heroes program, which honors firefighters and emergency rescue personnel for their heroic and everyday acts in the communities where Unicel's customers live, work and play.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- With the conclusion of the 2007-2008 academic year, the University of Kansas School of Allied Health recognizes students for their exceptional accomplishments with scholarships and awards.
Benjamin Michael Kinder¬knecht, Hays, received the Dean's Scholarship. The Dean's Scholarship is given to meritoriously award full-time students within the School of Allied Health who have demonstrated excellence in scholastic accomplishments, professional leadership and social consciousness as evidenced by achievements while in their selected program of study.
Mackenzie Ostmeyer, daughter of Kevin and Mim Tubbs, Almena, graduated summa cum laude from Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine on May 16.
Ostmeyer is a former Kennedy Middle School student and 2001 graduate of Almena-Northern Valley High School. She is the granddaughter of Regina Ostmeyer, Grinnell, and the late W.B. Ostmeyer.
