PITTSBURG -- Pittsburg State University announced its spring graduates during the spring 2008 commencement ceremonies.
Outstanding senior man and woman addressed the audience during the ceremonies.
Named outstanding senior woman was Ashley Lopez, daughter of Greg and JaNell Lopez, Pittsburg.
Lopez is a communication major with an emphasis in public relations and nonprofit work and has a minor in leadership studies.
She plans to start graduate school in the fall in Kansas City.
Lopez is the granddaughter of Don and Norinne Peterson, Hays.
Kansas City, Mo. -- Three area students received doctor of osteopathic medicine degrees from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in commencement ceremonies May 17.
Sarah Marie Gabel, daughter of Stephen and Yvonne Demuth, Hays, is a 2000 graduate of Hays High School. She earned bachelor's degrees in music and chemistry from Fort Hays State University. Gabel is a member of Sigma Sigma Phi, the national honorary osteopathic fraternity. She will complete a postdoctoral residency in family medicine at William Beaumont Hospital, Troy, Mich.
Kelly Bruce Gabel, son of Larry and Beth Gabel, Colby, is a 1999 graduate of St. Francis Community High School and earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Fort Hays State University. Gabel will complete a postdoctoral residency in general surgery at Botsford Hospital, Farmington Hills, Mich.
Dustin Benedict Urban, son of son of Darrel and Susan Urban, Pfeifer, and Charles and Dianne Carter, Salina, is a 1996 graduate of Victoria High School and earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Kansas State University in 2002. Urban will complete a residency in emergency medicine at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Three Fort Hays State University collegian members and nine FHSU alumnae of Alpha Gamma Delta attended the sorority's 45th International Convention on June 19 to 22 in San Antonio.
Grace Finney, Beloit, Julie Farrell, Frankfort, and Alexandra Walston, Wichita, were the collegians from the Alpha Gamma Delta Chapter from Fort Hays State University who were in attendance.
The FHSU alumnae attending were Teresa Davidson, Kirksville, Mo., Denise Wiedeman, Salina, Kathie Taylor, Hays, Shelley Sutton, Topeka, Roselyn Heckman, Phoenix, Lana Shults, and Heidi Martin, both of Wichita, Jenny Oxandale, Lawrence and Fern Hess, McPherson.
Heidi Martin, daughter of Lana Shults, was one of the four alumna initiates initiated at the international convention.
More than 660 Alpha Gamma Delta members from across the United States and Canada attended the four-day event Along with fraternity business, the international convention included recognitions, reunions, a philanthropy walk, educational speakers and workshops.
FHSU's Epsilon Mu Chapter was recognized as a Three Star Chapter for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and sisterhood.
The chapter also earned the Jewel Society membership for the 11th year for donating $2,000 to the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, which supports diabetes education and research. The fraternity was one of the first national women's groups to establish philanthropy.
Devoted to leadership, scholarship and community service. Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity for Women was founded in 1904 at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y., and has installed 182 chapters on campuses throughout the U.S. and Canada, Total membership is over 150,000. Fort Hays State University installed the Epsilon Mu Chapter in 1959 when Theta Sigma Upsilon merged with Alpha Gamma Delta.
