Hays native part of champion debate squad

HUTCHINSON -- The debate and forensics team at Hutchinson Community College and Area Vocational School wrapped up the 2012 season with 205 individual and team trophies.

At the State Debate and Forensics Tournament on Feb. 18 and 19 at Ottawa University, the HCC team won state in the Community College Debate and Community College Individual Events Sweepstakes categories. The team also took second in the All School Debate and All School Individual Events Sweepstakes.

At the JV National Tournament, hosted by Hutchinson Community College on March 10 and 11, HCC won the team national championship with five of the top 10 individual speakers and 31 trophies overall. Angel West, Fort Scott, led the way with three individual national championships in sweepstakes, parliamentary debate and informative speaking. Davis Mattek, Salina, won two titles in extemporaneous speaking and impromptu speaking, while Alexa Schoaff, Hays, was individual champion in after dinner speaking and communication analysis. Addison Tritt, Salina, also won the title in poetry interpretation and combined with teammate Autumn Brooks, Wichita, to win the duo interpretation championship.

The HCC Debate and Forensics team traveled to Kansas City for the Pi Kappa Delta National Comprehensive tournament March 17 and 18. The team placed 23rd out of 70 and was the highest placing Kansas school.

At the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament, the HCC Forensics team placed second in community college team sweepstakes and 32nd in the nation overall. HCC will host the event next year.

Members of the team include: Mattek, West, Tritt, Shoaff, Brooks, Jeff Daze, Wichita, and Angela Hasenbank, Bentley.

Travis Roberts, forensics and debate team coach also has been recognized as Regional Coach of the Year.
