DODGE CITY — Despite a split against Dodge City on Wednesday in the second doubleheader in as many days, the Hays Larks remain in first place in the Jayhawk League race.

The Larks took Game 1 4-2 behind a complete game from Parker Schkade, then the host A’s scored five runs in the second inning of the night cap to capture a 5-4 win.

Schkade made his first start of the season and struck out four with one walk, helping Hays pick up its 25th win and stay atop the league.

Colin Simpson had a two-out, two-run single that gave the Larks a third-inning lead they never gave up. Mikey Gangwish added a home run and an RBI double.

In the nightcap, Brad Sugg took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits through four innings. He had a 2-0 Hays lead before allowing five in the fifth. The Larks attempted a rally with solo home runs by Trevor Boone and Simpson in the fifth and sixth. Hays had the bases loaded in the fifth after the home run, but couldn’t score.

The split leaves Hays at 25-11 overall and 25-10 in league play, a game up on second-place Derby. Dodge City fell to 21-14 in league play.

The two close the five-game and season series in a 7 p.m. matchup today at Larks Park. The Larks then hit the road for three this weekend before closing the regular season next week.
