MARYSVILLE — Tate Garcia pitched five innings while Luke Ruder and Gavin Schumacher each drove in three runs and the Hays Monarchs moved to 2-0 in the Class AA Legion State Tournament with an 8-3 win against Garnett on Friday.

The win puts Hays in Saturday’s 6 p.m. semifinal game against Iola, a 7-6 winner over Doniphan. A loss Saturday would mean Hays would play again later in the evening, while a win would secure the Monarchs a spot in Sunday’s championship round.

Hays led 1-0 after one inning, but fell behind 2-1 after two innings Friday, then rallied with four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good.

Creighton Renz reached on an error to score Garcia to tie the game at two, then Luke Ruder drove in a pair of runs to put Hays up 4-2, scoring Schumacher and Chase Werth. Eston Brown reached on an error to score Renz. For good measure, Hays added three more runs in the seventh on a bases-clearing double by Schumacher.

Garcia picked up the win in five innings. He allowed three runs (all earned) on four hits with four walks. Ryan Ruder pitched the final two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
