WICHITA — The Hays Larks opened its return to the National Baseball Congress World Series with a pool-play win over the San Antonio Angels on Sunday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Alex Lopez and Tyler Starks teamed up for a shutout in the 6-0 win.

Lopez scattered seven hits over eight innings with four strikeouts. Starks sat the Angels down in order to close out the win.

Clayton Rasbeary put the Larks in front with an inside-the-park home run in the fourth before Ke’one Givens tripled in Jace Selsor in the seventh.

Lopez returned for his final frame with a six-run cushion after the Larks scored four in the top of the eighth.

Jacob Boston opened the big inning with an RBI single before Selsor doubled Boston in. Trey Ochoa followed with a run-scoring triple.

The Larks scored their final run on a Givens single. The centerfielder led the team with two RBI and joined Selsor, Rasbeary and Colin Simpson with two hits. Hays out-hit San Antonio 12-7 in the game and did not commit an error in the field.

The Larks are scheduled to play their second game of pool play against Cheney Diamond Dogs. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lawrence Dumont.
