One tournament in and one invitational title for Hays High School golfer Karee Dinkel.
The transfer from Thomas More Prep-Marian opened the 2017 season with the Indians by winning Monday’s HHS Invitational at Smoky Hill Country Club, doing it in dramatic fashion with a birdie on the first playoff hole.
Dinkel fired a 39 to lead the way, tying for the top spot with Salina Central’s Ellie Cobb, then winning on the playoff to lead Hays High to the overall team title.
The Indians finished at 207, 16 shots ahead of runner-up Liberal. Garden City was third at 224. TMP-Marian was fourth with a 225.
The Indians’ second-best golfer finished at 54 in Emily McGuire, while a pair of 57s from Emily George and Brittani Park rounded out the team score. Molly Eikenberry (69) and Sophia Garrison (65) rounded Hays HIgh’s six.
The 39 puts Karee Dinkel in the early lead in the Western Athletic Conference field. The next-best score came from Garden City’s Alyssa McMillen, a sophomore who finished third with a 44 Monday. Liberal’s Corey Mein shot a 47.
For TMP-Marian, Shannen Chin fired a 47 to lead the Monarchs’ fourth-place showing, and she finished fifth, individually.
Kay Walters was the Monarchs' next best at 54, while Avin Inlow (61) and Jenna Rome (63) rounded the team card. Haleigh Spray and Michaela Dreher each fired a 73.
Hays High next heads to Salina Central on Sept. 5. TMP-Marian goes to Goodland the same day.
