GREAT BEND — The Hays High School girls’ cross country team finished third and the boys fourth to open the 2017 season Thursday at Great Bend.

The Indian girls scored 67 points to finish behind Garden City (23) and McPherson (51). Hays High was paced by Yesenia Maldonado, who finished in ninth place with a time of 22 minutes, 46 seconds. The next best Indian runner was Tana Herreman, who ran 23:45 to finished 17th. Madison Schmidt (24:04), Claire Shippy (24:08), Kassie Zimmer (24:43), Cristina Leos (24:51), Maddie Lohmeyer (25:56) and Trinity Callis (29:49) also competed.

On the boys’ side, Hays High was led by Dawson VanFeldt, who finished 14th with a time of 18:22. Johnny Fuller came in at 22nd in 19:12. Justice Dotts (19:51), Grant Brungardt (20:01), Trystin Johnson (20:56) and Conner Cunningham (21:04) rounded out the varsity squad.

Garden City won the boys’ title with 29 points. Great Bend had 57, Hutchinson 101, Salina South 127 and Hays High 141.

Hays High is off until Thursday when it travels to Hesston. Start time is 3:30 p.m.
