Fort Hays State quarterback Jacob Mezera and kicker Brandon Brown earned MIAA honors in Week 1 of conference player.
Following their performances in a 48-7 Tiger win over Missouri Southern, Mezera was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, while Brown earned the same designation on special teams.
Mezera was highly efficient in the victory as FHSU built a 41-7 lead by halftime, and the junior didn’t play in the fourth quarter.
Mezera competed 21 of 29 passes for 245 yards with two touchdowns, plus added a rushing score to open the 2017 season for FHSU.
Brown had a perfect day kicking. He made all six of his extra points and nailed field goals of 39 and 36 yards. He also averaged 56 yards per kickoff with three touchbacks.
FHSU, after the victory, began receiving votes in the AFCA NCAA Division II coaches poll. The Tigers take on No. 13 ranked University of Central Missouri in a 7 p.m. contest Thursday at Lewis Field Stadium.
