SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Fort Hays State University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to open the season Friday in the Country Inn & Suites Invitational.
The Tigers fell in five sets to Arkansas-Fort Smith, then fell in three sets to host Sioux Falls.
Against Arkansas-Fort Smith, the winner of two of the last three NCAA Division II South Central Region titles, the Tigers dropped the first set 21-25, but stormed back to take the second and third sets, 25-23, 25-16.
FHSU, though, dropped the fourth set 23-25, before Fort Smith took the tiebreaker, 20-18.
Kylie Rollman had a career-best 20 kills, while adding five assisted blocks and an ace.
Callie Christensen had 15 kills and 10 blocks, while Sydney Dixon had 11 kills with five digs and two blocks.
Sioux Falls defeated the Tigers in straight sets, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20 in FHSU’s second match of the day. Dixon had six kills to lead the way with two blocks and three digs. Christensen had five blocks and four kills, while Amirah Bentley had 23 assist and a pair of aces.
FHSU then picked up its first win of the season Saturday morning, defeating Black Hills State, 3-2. 25-20, 19-25, 12-25, 25-19, 15-13.
Logan Wallick had 19 kills for FHSU, while Christensen and Rollman each had 10 for FHSU. Christensen also led the way with six blocks while Bentley recorded 43 assists and Taylor White 28 digs.
The Tigers then knocked off William Jewell in a wild one for their second victory. FHSU picked up a 25-17, 25-13, 24-26, 30-32, 15-4 win to move to 2-2.
Christensen, who earned a spot on the all-Tournament team, had nine blocks to lead the way defensively. Four Tigers reached double digits in kills, led by Wallick at 19. Dixon had 13, Rollman 13 and Christensen 10.
FHSU will be in North Canton, Ohio, starting Thursday for more tournament action.
