WICHITA — Behind a big second half, the Hays High School boys’ soccer team picked up an 8-5 victory over Wichita Home School on Monday in the first round of the Titan Classic, hosted by Wichita South High School.
The Indians trailed 4-3 at halftime after trailing 2-1, 3-0 and 4-2. Ethan Nunnery scored three first-half goals as the Indians stayed in it. The first goal made Nunnery Hays High’s all-time leading scorer as he was tied at 47 goals for his career with current head coach Silas Hibbs, who set the mark in four seasons with the Indians.
Nunnery went on to score five in the match as Hays High (2-1) rallied, tying the game in the 48th minute on a penalty kick by Zach Wagner. WHS answered to take the lead, but the Indians scored the next four to seal the win, putting them in today’s semifinals against Wichita Southeast, a 3-1 winner against Hutchinson on Monday.
In addition to Nunnery and Wagner, Conner Teget and Trae McCrae added goals. Wagner finished with four assists and Jacob Maska had two. Teget played 60 minutes in goal, giving up all five goals. Jack Fort played 20 in goal.
