LIBERAL — Usually, it’s senior Karee Dinkel with the individual title and the Hays High School girls’ golf team finishing second. That’s the way it’s been numerous times this season.
That is, until Thursday. The two flip-flopped positions. Dinkel finished second for the Indians, leading Hays High to a team championship Thursday in the Liberal Invitational at Willow Tree Golf Course (Par 36).
Dinkel fired a 42 in second place, helping Hays High to a 185 in first place for the nine-hole event. Emily McGuire finished in sixth place with a 46, Brittani Park in eight with a 48 and Emily George in ninth with a 49.
The Indians finished eight strokes better than runner-up Garden City. Liberal’s Corey Mein took top individual honors with a 40 on her home course.
Molly Eikenberry (51) and Sophia Garrison (54) rounded out Hays High’s top six.
With one Western Athletic Conference scoring meet remaining, the Indians have opened a 17-stroke lead, while Dinkel leads the individual race with 59 points, 4.5 ahead of Garden City’s Alyssa McMillen and Mein.
