PHILLIPSBURG — The Norton Community High School cross country teams swept the Mid-Continent League Championships on Thursday.

The Bluejay girls, led by Lexi Kats’ second-place finish, scored 27 points to just beat Thomas More Prep-Marian by six points. Norton placed four in the top 14 of the MCL standings. Colby a non-MCL school also competed.

TMP was led by a seventh-place finish for Julia Werth, who covered the course in 22 minutes, 41.50 seconds. Emily Schippers was close behind in eighth in 22:56.40.

Trego’s Helen Giefer paced the race, finishing in 20:19.22. Trego finished third.

On the boys’ side, Norton scored 18 in the MCL team standings, blowing away the competition. Runner-up Trego scored 39 points, while TMP-Marian was third with 56.

Trego’s Bernard Giefer paced the boys’ race. He ran 18:28.11, while Norton took the next three MCL spots, followed by Wyndom Giefer in fifth.

TMP’s Jared Meyers finished sixth in the league standings at 19:16.21 with Paul Brull eighth in 19:32.77.
