GARDEN CITY — Hays High Schools’ Yesenia Maldonado captured an eighth-place finish Thursday in the Western Athletic Conference meet, hosted by Garden City High School.

Maldonado was the only HHS runner to earn all-WAC honors, covering the course in 17 minutes, 55 seconds as the Indian girls finished with 119 points — fifth in the five-team WAC. Tana Herreman cracked the top 20 with a 19th-place finish in 18:54. Rounding out the Indians varsity was Madison Schmidt (20:29), Claire Shippy (21:15), Kassie Zimmer (21:19) and Maddie Lohmeyer (21:20).

The Indian boys scored 148 points in fifth place. Dawson VonFeldt paced Hays High with a 23rd-place showing in 19:03.

Justice Dotts was the next best, running 33rd at 20:18. Garrett Gregg (21:16), Mark Schuckman (21:27), Conner Cunningham (22:17) and Johnny Fuller (22:35) rounded out the HHS varsity.

The Indians next will compete Oct. 21 in the Class 4A regional at McPherson.
