WaKEENEY — The Thomas More Prep-Marian volleyball team got off to a good start in the Mid-Continent League Tournament, played in two pools Thursday at Trego Community High School.

TMP defeated Oakley and Phillipsburg to move to 32-1 as the No. 3 ranked team by the Kansas Volleyball Association in Class 3A.

TMP defeated Oakley 25-16, 25-11 and Phillipsburg, 22-25, 25-21, 25-12.

Kayla Vitztum had 29 kills to lead the way, while Jillian Lowe recorded 24 digs and Bailey Lacy four blocks.

Stockton also went 2-0 in the same pool, grabbing a 25-22, 19-25, 25-15 win against Norton and 25-16, 25-8 win against Oakley. Phillipsburg finished 1-1 while Norton and Oakley went 0-2.

In the second pool, top-seeded Plainville suffered a loss to host Trego. Plainville, the No. 4 ranked team in Class 2A, suffered just its third loss of the season as Trego captured the 22-25, 25-21, 25-15 victory. The Golden Eagles are 2-0 after Day 1, as is Smith Center. The Lady Red defeated Ellis, 25-29, 25-10 and Hill City, 25-22, 25-16. Trego also defeated Hill City, 25-22, 25-12. Plainville captured a 25-23, 25-9 win against Ellis to move to 1-1. Hill City and Ellis each went 0-2

Pool play continues Saturday morning, then the top two teams out of each pool will be entered into Saturday’s semifinals.
