ABILENE — It’s like deja vu all over again for the Indians.

Needing a win to keep its playoff hopes alive Friday night, the Hays High School football team put up one of its best performances this season in a 36-0 shutout on the road in Abilene.

The victory gives the Indians (3-5) an opportunity to grab the runner-up spot in Class 4A Division I, District 8 with a win Friday against Wamego.

Wamego defeated Abilene a week ago before dropping a game to McPherson on Friday night. The Bullpups are 2-0 in district play, while HHS and Wamego are both at 1-1.

Hays High led 8-0 against the Cowboys after the first quarter and 15-0 at halftime.

The Indians tacked on another touchdown in the third quarter to lead 22-0 entering the final 12 minutes.

HHS added two more scores in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Friday’s game against Wamego is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays.

A year ago, the Indians were in a similar position — needing a win on the road at Wamego to make the postseason. But Wamego was able to beat Hays High to end the Indians’ season.
