PHILLIPSBURG — The Phillipsburg High School football team wasted little time getting off to a hot start in the Class 3A playoffs.

The Panthers jumped on top of Riley-Riley County 34-0 by halftime, and rolled to a 48-13 victory to open the postseason.

Trey Sides hit Trey Thompson for scores of 21 and 39 yards in the first and second quarters, while John Gower, Sides and Treylan Gross had scoring runs of 12, 45 and 45 to record the Panthers’ 34-0 halftime lead at home.

Kirk Coomes added 44-yard rushing score in the third quarter, then Nathan Moon added Phillipsburg’s final TD from 6 yards. Riley County ended its season at 7-3.

Sides ended the night with 138 yards passing and two scores with two carries for 44 yards and a score. Coomes had 125 yards rushing on 10 carries with Gross collecting seven carries for 80 yards and Gower nine for 75. Moon added five carries for 45 yards.

The Panthers now will travel to Hoisington on Saturday for a second-round matchup with the Cardinals (7-3). Hoisington defeated Cimarron 47-22.

Marysville 62, Norton 21

In Marysville, the host Bulldogs ended Norton’s season at 7-3. Marysville advances to face Larned in a 3 p.m. matchup Saturday in Larned. Larned defeated Lakin 42-6 in other first-round action.
