ELKHART — Looking much like the dominant teams that earned five straight championships in Class 2-1A, the Smith Center High School football game hasn’t played a close game since losing to unbeaten Class 3A Phillipsburg in Week 2.

Friday night against Elkhart in the Class 2-1A state quarterfinals was no exception.

Jesse Staples rushed for 259 yards and four touchdowns, and the Redmen captured a 64-7 victory to roll into next week’s sub-state championship rematch against Plainville.

Smith Center now has outscored its previous eight opponents 488-27, and hasn’t allowed more than a touchdown to any of them — and has won nine straight games.

The Redmen will play host to a Plainville team it defeated 16-7 to open the season.

Smith Center racked up 565 rushing yards in Elkhart on Friday from eight different ball carriers, with Hesston Maxwell finding the end zone twice on 10 carries for 47 yards. Trace Haven added 10 carries for 79 yards and a score, while Colby Benoit had 92 yards, all coming on one touchdown run.

Colton Hutchinson had a pair of interceptions on defense, and completed 4 of 6 passes for 64 yards. He added 52 rushing yards on seven carries and a score.

Friday’s game in Smith Center will be a rematch of last year’s sub-state game, won 14-0 by Plainville.
