Pulling away in the third quarter by outscoring the visitor 22-14, the Fort Hays State University women’s basketball team moved to 4-0 Saturday with a 76-63 victory against Newman University at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Tatyana Legette led four Tigers in double figures with 17 points, hitting 4 of 6 from the free throw line. As a team, FHSU finished 15 of 23 from the foul line and hit five 3-pointers, shooting 42.4 percent from the floor.
Taylor Rolfs chipped in 13 points, Kacey Kennett 12 and Whitney Clampitt 10. The Tigers won despite being outrebounded 42-35 by the Jets. FHSU held a 13-9 advantage after one quarter, and led by just four at halftime.
Legette added 17 boards to hit the double-double. She also had two blocked shots and three steals.
Newman (3-2) was led by 19 points for Haley Albers, who hit four 3s and was 6-for-12 from the floor.
Fort Hays is off until Saturday when the Tigers face Sterling College in a 5:30 p.m. tip at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
