The Fort Hays State University football team now knows its opponent for the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs on Saturday. Ferris State (Mich.) will come to Hays with a record of 10-1 to face the 11-0 Tigers. It will be a battle of Top 10 nationally ranked teams with FHSU at No. 4 and Ferris State at No. 10.
Ferris State knocked off Great American Conference Champion Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) in the opening round of the playoffs on Saturday. Ouachita Baptist led 13-7 at halftime, but a fumble return for a touchdown by Ferris State in the third quarter turned the tide of the game. OBU led 19-17 after a field goal with 10:17 remaining, but Ferris State followed with a 75-yard touchdown drive with the game-winning score at 6:13 on the clock. Ferris State escaped with a 24-19 win on its home field in rainy conditions.
Fort Hays State had a week off with the No. 1 seed in Super Region 3. Ferris State is the No. 4 seed in the Super Region. On the opposite side of the Super Region bracket, No. 3 Ashland (Ohio) held on at home to knock off No. 6 seed Northwest Missouri State, the two-time defending national champion, 21-18. There was one upset, though, as No. 7 seed Harding (Ark.) knocked off undefeated No. 2 seed Indianapolis on the road, 27-24. Ashland will host Harding in the other Super Region 3 game on Saturday.
