ABILENE — The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls’ and boys’ basketball teams suffered a sweep Friday night at the hands of Abilene.
The TMP girls, suffering their first loss since the season-opening Hays City Shootout, dropped a 38-34 decision to the Cowgirls, while the TMP boys fell 50-40 to cap the night.
The Monarch girls and Abilene played to a 17-17 tie by the end of the first quarter, but Abilene went on to outscore the Monarchs 7-3 in the second, then 14-7 in the third to pull away.
Abilene contained Monarch senior Kayla Vitztum to just six points.
With the win, Abilene — the No. 4 ranked team in Class 4A Division I — snapped TMP’s 12-game winning streak. The Monarchs are ranked No. 5 in Class 3A. TMP is off until facing Norton on Friday in Norton.
The Monarch boys played within single digits of the host Cowboys most of the night, but never did grab a lead. The Monarchs trailed 10-6 at the end of the first quarter, then by 10 at halftime before chipping the lead to four points in the third. TMP, though, never got any closer as the Cowboys pulled away again in the final frame to take the victory.
Michael Lager had 14 points to lead the way for TMP, with David McFarland chipping in 11.
The Monarchs suffered their second straight loss for just the second time this season as they fell to 10-4.
