It came down to two singles matches to decide the winner between Fort Hays State and Emporia State tennis teams Tuesday, and the Tigers walked away with a 5-4 win in their first MIAA home match. This also was the first MIAA win of the early 2018 season for FHSU. The Tigers now are 6-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The Hornets came into the match with only four players, so the Tigers earned an early 3-0 lead. In doubles play, FHSU went 0-2 as Natalie Lubbers and Ellea Ediger fell 8-4 to Kaley Clark and Sarah Durham. In the second match, Silvana Carceres and her partner Shannen Meyer defeated the Tiger duo of Lauren Lindell and Macy Moyers 8-5.
Singles play was where the intensity kicked in as Moyers grabbed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Carceres. Laura Jimenez-Lendinez fell to Clark in a long battle by a score of 6-4, 6-4. However, Natalie Lubbers picked up an important tilt against Durham 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to help the Tigers captured the 5-4 win in conference.
The Tigers are back at home today for, squaring off in a 3 p.m. set against Washburn.
