Firing his lowest round of the season, Phillipsburg High School junior Trey Sides came away with the Mid-Continent League Championship on Thursday.
Sides, pacing his team to a tournament championship by one shot, fired an even 71 at Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course.
The Panthers fired a 322 to edge MCL foe and golf rival Plainville by one shot for the 2018 team trophy. Earlier this week, Plainville had won Phillipsburg’s home invitational by seven shots.
Plainville, led by a third-place 74 for junior Tanner Copeland, finished with a 323 while Trego Community finished third with a 350.
Dalton Mai, a junior for the Golden Eagles, was second Thursday at The Fort, shooting a 36-36 to finish one over.
Sides, after going 2-under on the back nine, shot 38 on the front to claim his third individual crown this season.
Host TMP-Marian finished fourth in the team standings with a 361. Cameron Rozean led the way with a fifth place 78. The Monarch junior was two shots back of Stockton junior Brady Beougher, who fired a 35 on the back nine to finish with a 76.
Phillipsburg’s second golfer was senior Jacey Kellerman. He fired an 80 to finish in seventh place, while Nathan Moon and Tyler Martin completed the Panthers’ title-winning team score.
Parker Krob was Plainville’s second score as he finished with with an 80, while Justin Plante and Dalton Benedick, 83 and 86, respectively, contributed in the team standings.
Teams are off until Monday when they travel to their respective regional tournaments.
