DODGE CITY — The Hays Sr. Legion Monarchs baseball team lost one and tied in tournament action Saturday in Dodge City.
The Monarchs fell 3-1 at the hands of Liberal 18-under, then battled back to tie the game at 10 in the bottom of the seventh, ending with a 10-10 tie against Russell.
Against Liberal, Hays starter Cole Zimmerman gave up three unearned runs — two coming in the second inning. The other run came in the fourth as the Monarchs committed four errors in the contest.
Hays’ lone run came on an RBI from Gavin Schumacher in the fifth inning.
Against Russell, the Monarchs led 7-3 early, but gave up six runs in the fourth inning. Hays then trailed 10-8 heading to the bottom of the seventh before tying the game.
Eston Brown drove into a fielder’s choice to score Chase Werth, then Adam Gottschalk singled to score Creighton Renz. Hays had two baserunners with no outs before Trenton Mayo struck out and Tate Garcia flew out to the second baseman to end the game.
The Monarchs put up 11 hits with four multiple-hit games. Schumacher had three hits and walk, while Luke Ruder had two hits and walked three times, scoring two runs. He also had the game’s lone home run.
Garcia pitched four innings, throwing 100 pitches and surrendering nine earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Hays is back in action at noon Sunday against a to-be-determined opponent.
