GREAT BEND — The Hays Monarchs Sr. Legion baseball team is 3-0 in tournament action at Great Bend after a pair of wins Saturday against Hoisington and host Great Bend.
The Monarchs defeated Larned 11-10 on Friday to open play.
In the Friday contest, Hays blasted out 13 hits with Eston Brown, Gavin Schumacher, Cole Zimmerman and Adam Gottschalk each having multi-hit games.
Creighton Renz also drove in a pair of runs, helping a win on the mound for Zimmerman in relief. Zimmerman pitched the eighth inning, the fifth Monarch pitcher, for the win.
In Saturdays’ 5-4 win against Hoisington, the Monarchs led 5-2 heading to the sixth before Hoisington plated two runs to narrow the gap. Chase Werth, though, slammed the door on his complete game by coaxing a pair of groundouts and recording a strikeout. He threw 104 pitches, recording nine strikeouts and giving up three hits in the victory.
Hays had just four hits, but walked nine times with Zimmerman driving in a pair of runs to lead the way.
The Monarchs then wrapped its day Saturday with a 5-1 win against Great Bend. Hays plated three in the second inning then two in the fifth. Brown, Schumacher and Trenton Mayo recorded two hits each as Hays finished with 10.
Zimmerman collected the win in five innings pitched. He gave up just two hits while striking out 13. Carlos Schwindt recorded a save in two innings.
The Monarchs are slated to face Dodge City at noon Sunday.
