GARDEN CITY — The Hays High School wrestling team was led by a pair of eight-place finishes Friday and Saturday in the Rocky Welton Invitational at Garden City High School.

The Indians’ Davontai Robinson moved to 14-8 by finishing eighth at 182 pounds, while Logan Schulte (12-6) had the same finish at 285 pounds.

Each lost their final match. Robinson suffered a technical fall against Doherty’s Logan Maslanik, and Schulte was pinned by Republic County’s Eyann Zimmerman. The Indians got placings from four other wrestlers. Corey Hale was 12th at 126 pounds, falling by pin in the 11th-place match. Kreighton Meyers matched the feat at 160 pounds, falling via a sudden victory, 7-5, to Pueblo East’s Diego Duarte. Creighton Newell took home a 14th-place finish at 132, falling to Great Bend’s Jeffrey Spragis in the 13th-place match.

Chase Voth was the only Indian to win his final match of the weekend, though it came by injury default in the 15th-place match.

The Indians are off until Thursday when they take on Garden City in a 5 p.m. dual at the HHS gym.

From the area, Hoxie High School senior standout Dayton Porsch suffered his first loss of the season as he dropped a sudden-victory 5-3 match to Goddard’s Trevor Dopps. Porsch is 28-1.
