GODDARD -- The Hays High School baseball season came to an end Wednesday when the Indians lost 3-1 to Maize South in their Class 5A regional semifinal, hosted by Goddard-Eisenhower.

Hays High's lone run came in the bottom of the first inning, an unearned run by senior Kade Parker. All of Maize South's runs came in the top of the third.

Layne Downing took the loss for the Indians. He pitched the complete game, giving up seven hits and striking out seven batters. All three runs were earned.

The trouble came on offense, where the Indians combined for just four hits, two of which came in the first inning. Maize South (8-12) had three fielding errors to none for Hays High.

The Indians ended their season 13-8 overall.
